REPORT ON THE LAUNCH OF THE 125 TH ANNIVERSARY APPEAL
In September 2003, the SPHS launched its 125 th Anniversary Appeal and the Society’s Schools Programme - to place support for schools at the very heart of the Society’s activities and to ensure the continuation of our subject in future years. At the time of the preparation of this report (September 2004) income to the 125 th Anniversary Fund stands at just over £28,600. We record our most sincere appreciation to all those individuals and institutions who have made such generous donations (and who are recorded on the preceding page). Details of the activities sponsored by the Appeal Fund to date and our commitments in the Schools Programme are recorded in this Report brochure.
The 125 th Anniversary Appeal will continue to accept donations, as our Schools Programme is ongoing. If you have not already made a donation, we hope that you will consider contributing to this excellent cause. A donation form (and gift aid declaration) is available on request from the Society Office and can be downloaded from our website.
REPORT ON ACADEMIC EVENTS & ACTIVITIES IN THE 125 TH ANNIVERSARY SESSION 2003-2004
On Wednesday 15 October 2003, there was a special evening exhibition event sponsored under Greece in Britain in the North Cloisters, University College London to mark the opening of the exhibition: Photographs of the Athenian Acropolis: The Restoration Project, 1975 - 2002by Socratis Mavrommatis. This event saw nearly 150 people gathering. Mr Socratis Mavrommatis and members of the Acropolis Restoration Service at the Greek Ministry of Culture attended. This fascinating and impressive collection of photographs ran to December 2003. The catalogue of this exhibition was presented to the Society’s Library.
On Thursday 13 November 2003 at Senate House, Dr Chris Stray gave a Special Joint Lecture to over 100 in order to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the SPHS and the Centenary of the Classical Association (CA), entitled “Promoting and Defending: reflections on the history of the Hellenic Society and the Classical Association”. The lecture was followed by a reception to launch the CA’s centennial volume, The Classical Association: the First Century 1903-2003, edited by Chris Stray. This lecture was published as a booklet by the CA in summer 2004: it is available to non-CA members at price £2-50 (inc postage) and can be ordered by contacting the SPHS or the CA.
On Thursday 29 January 2004 , Professor Jasper Griffin gave a lecture to the Society entitled "From Greek History to Attic Tragedy" in Election Hall, at Eton College , Eton , Windsor . After the lecture, about 40 members of the Society and their guests enjoyed a special exhibition of Greek and Latin books and materials of Classical interest held in College Library.
In a joint lecture with the Seventeenth University of London Festival of Greek Drama and the Institute of Classical Studies on Wednesday 18 February 2004 , Professor Richard Green gave an illustrated lecture entitled “Art and the Theatre in the Ancient World” to a packed audience at Senate House. In a further joint lunch-time presentation with the Festival of Greek Drama and the Institute on Wednesday 25 February 2004 , Dr Richard Williams gave an illustrated lecture entitled “Greek Theatre Masks – 3D imaging and performance research” at Senate House. This was a demonstration of the findings of the AHRB New Comedy Masks Project, which has imaged New Comedy mask miniatures from UK and European museums so as to investigate their inherent dramatic qualities. There was the opportunity to handle replicas and reconstructions of the masks, and the highlight of the event was an actor performing scenes of Menander in reconstruction mask and costume.
On Thursday 11 and Friday 12 March 2004, the Hellenic Society joined with the Institute of Classical Studies to host a special Colloquium on “Studying The Ancient Greek Theatre” to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the ICS and 125th Anniversary of the SPHS and attended by nearly 100 delegates over the two days. The Colloquium celebrated the work of the ICS and SPHS, and the emerging discipline of the study of ancient drama and theatre in the last 125 years with the birth of reception studies, modern day performances of Greek drama and their history, and modern databases of theatre archaeology and artefacts. The Colloquium show-cased current work in the UK on Ancient Greek drama and the theatre, and incorporated presentations by groups and scholars working in the field. In particular, through Young Scholars Fora the Colloquium enabled graduate students and young scholars to present papers on their own studies, and to establish contact with others in the discipline. Key-note speakers and participants were: Professor Eric Handley, Professor Richard Green, Professor Axel Seeberg, Professor Tyler Jo Smith, Professor Chris Carey, Dr Richard Williams, Dr Nick Lowe, Professor Pat Easterling, Professor Edith Hall, Professor Alan Sommerstein, Professor Judith Mossman, Professor Lorna Hardwick, Professor David Wiles . On Saturday 24 April 2004 , in a joint event with the Roman Society and the Institute of Classical Studies , the Society organised a Classical Day-Trip to Petworth House and Bignor Roman Villa. A party of about 45 visitors made their way to West Sussex (some in the coach and some independently). Professor Brian Sparkes produced a short Guide noting the sculptures and items of particular interest to Classicists at Petworth House. At Bignor, the group enjoyed an introduction by Mr Peter Allison, the Curator; Mr David Rudling spoke about the recent work of University College London's Field Archaeology Unit; and Professor John Wilkes, commented on some of the features of interest at Bignor.

Kathia was present on the occasion of the 125 th Anniversary AGM to receive her prize cheque of £200 in person.
“SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS” PROGRAMME
The SPHS has initiated a national scheme to award schools with free teaching materials. War with Troy : The Story of Achilles (a pack of 3 CDs and a teacher handbook) is an important initiative of the Cambridge School Classics Project, and uses the story of the Iliad to introduce Greek myths and story-telling and raise literacy for KS2 students. Through the generosity of the grant from the Classical Association, the SPHS has been able to form a significant fund for schools and is operating a scheme to make 125 copies free to schools, with other free and subsided copies to follow. Pegasus and Mendios is a book for junior schools by the acclaimed story-teller Eugene Trivizas (and with brilliant cartoon illustrations by Stathis) and tells the amazing adventures of a winged horse and a little donkey. It is wonderfully written, colourful and attractive and introduces much information on ancient Greece and the mythology of Greece . Through the kindness of the Press Counsellor’s Office at the Greek Embassy and the Foundation for Hellenic Culture, UK , the SPHS has been able to make copies available to UK schools. Through the support of JACT, copies of Omnibus Omnibus II, a magazine of articles on Classics, are also being donated free to schools to aid the promotion of Greece .
With the introduction of the “Support for Schools” section, the SPHS website has been turned into an essential teaching support mechanism to study Greek and ancient Greece - especially for junior school teachers. A full series of colourful downloadable sheets of “Mini-Greek” activities (compiled by Anne Wright, Head of Classics at Westminster Cathedral Choir School ) introducing the Greek language for junior pupils is available. There are downloadable pages of games, cross-words, word-searches, and quizzes on Greece and Greek from Tempora Clausenti (the magazine produced by the Southampton Branch of the Classical Association), as well as Our Greek and Latin Roots and much other material suitable for young students. Our 125 th Anniversary Schools’ Quiz on Greece and Hellenic Studies has now been launched on the website. The Quiz covers all aspects of Ancient Greece at varying levels (Primary, Junior, Intermediate and Sixth-Form).
In conjunction with the JACT Greek Committee, the SPHS is currently preparing an Information Pack on introducing and supporting Greek in schools. With the recent announcement of the AQA Examination Board that they will be dropping their Greek specifications, this Pack will naturally provide essential support to teachers in the face of this decision. In conjunction with JACT, the SPHS is also sponsoring a special “Teaching Greek” INSET Day on Saturday 12 February 2005 at the Institute of Classical Studies and subsidising the costs so that there will be no registration fee for teachers. The SPHS has formed a Schools Lecture Panel and is expanding the provision it makes to local classics groups to fund joint lectures, and to schools or groups of schools who wish to bring in such speakers.
The SPHS has now launched its 125 th Anniversary Schools’ Competition with Primary (KS2), Junior (KS3), Intermediate (KS4) and Senior (Sixth Form) sections. The Competition includes art, creative writing, factual research on Greece and the Greeks, and an examination of the influence and relevance of Greece today. The Society is funding generous cash prizes for the different sections, as well as presenting videos and books and other materials on Greece ; and it is hoped that a sponsored trip or travel to Greece might form part of the prize for the winning sixth former.
The SPHS is now funding Grants for Greece in Schools Activities and supporting schools which will help us celebrate the 125 th Anniversary by holding some form of Greek event. We have supported Greek days and events, speakers at school conferences, school Greek plays and other such activities, with areas such as Greek drama, story-telling, Greek cookery, dance and cultural activities being encouraged. The SPHS website lists such groups who visit schools.
The SPHS sponsored a visit to London by Mrs Cornelia Hadziaslani of the Centre for Acropolis Studies in Athens . Following her very successful presentations of some of the Acropolis Centre Museum Kits and other teaching materials on the occasion of the JACT AGM on Saturday 22 May 2004, the Centre will be generously donating some of the Museum Kits to the SPHS, which will be made available on loan to UK schools starting in the 2004-05 session through a joint scheme of JACT and the SPHS. The SPHS will also be awarding other teaching materials from the Centre for Acropolis Studies free of charge to schools.
