GRANTS AWARDED IN FINANCIAL YEAR 2006
In 2006 the Hellenic Society made awards of £22,359 to many projects concerning all aspects of Hellenic studies. A very significant part of Society subscription income is channelled annually into the various grants and awards the Society makes.
A. Awards made by Council in 2006
Awards from the Centenary Appeal Grant Fund –Total: £9,502
1. Conferences: awards were made to the following institutions to support attendance and student bursary schemes at international and national conferences and colloquia: International Byzantine Congress 2006 - £1,000; Oxford University Greek Society (Greece and Balkans Conference) - £500; University of Nottingham (CADRE Trachiniai Conference) - £200; University College London (Hellenistic Karia Conference) - £500; University College London (Epinician Conference) - £400; Ancient Drama Archives Conference (Tragedy and Dance) - £400; University of Durham (Plato/Hesiod Conference) - £500; Ancient Drama Archives Conference (Pronomos Conference) - £400; University of Oxford (Culture in Pieces Conference) - £200; University of Manchester (AMPAL 2006 Conference) - £302.
2. Summer School and Student Bursaries: grants were made to the British School at Athens to be used as bursaries for students attending the 2006 Undergraduate Summer School - £1,000; to the British School at Athens to be used as bursaries for students attending the 2006 Postgraduate Taught Course - £1,000; to the British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara (to support a student during a fieldwork season) - £400; to the British School at Athens (to support a student during a fieldwork season) - £400; to the Queen’s University of Belfast Byzantine Greek Summer School 2006 (to support student attendance) - £400; to Mr J-M Carbon - £400 - and Mr C MacIver - £400 - (as student bursaries as part of the 2006 Fondation Hardt Bursary Scheme); to the Thomas Wiedemann Fund (as student travel provision) - £500; and to Lincoln College, Oxford (Greek Palaeography Summer School 2006) - £500.
B. Awards made by the Schools Sub-Committee in 2006
Awards from the Centenary Appeal Grant Fund –Total: £1,750
1. Summer School: grants were awarded to the following 2006 summer schools: the JACT Classical Civilisation and Ancient History Summer School - £400; the Lampeter Summer Workshop in Greek and Latin - £600; the Durham Classical Summer School - £750.
C. Awards made by the Schools Sub-Committee in 2006
Awards from the Centenary Appeal Grant Fund – Total: £4,912
In 2006 the Hellenic Society was able to help many schools and summer schools financially and pays tribute again to the continuing generosity of the Leventis Foundation, which gave a further grant of £5,000 to the Society to be spent on schools and projects relating to schools. In 2006 all kinds of schools and colleges - secondary and sixth form, state and independent, and schools from all parts of the British Isles - were again helped with a wide range of resources, projects and activities.
1. Meetings and Classics days: grants were awarded to: the Queen's University of Belfast (for the 2006 Annual Young Classicists' Conference) - £200; Godolphin & Latymer School (for the Ancient Greek Breakfast Club) - £200.
2. Books & Teaching Materials: grants were awarded to: Rochester Grammar School £300; Hitchin Girls’ School - £200; Alcester High School Technology College - £40; Dover Grammar School for Girls - £472; The King’s School, Peterborough - £400; Maynard School, Exeter - £250; Wakefield Girls’ High School - £350; Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales School - £400; Highlands School, Enfield - £300; Tiffin School for Boys - £200; The Nobel School, Stevenage - £200; St John’s School & Community College, Marlborough - £200; and a further grant to the British School at Athens (for books for teachers visiting the School) - £400.
3. Student Summer Schools: grants were awarded to the following 2006 summer schools: the JACT Greek Summer School - £500; the London Summer School in Classics - £300.
D. Awards made by the Dover Fund Sub-Committee in 2006
Awards from the Dover Fund – Total: £790
The Dover Fund Sub-Committee made awards to research students for the following projects in March 2006: Mr A Antonopoulos - £140; Ms L Franco - £250; Mr K Palaiologos - £250; Ms H Tarbet -£150.
E. Schools Programme supported by the Schools Sub-Committee in 2006
Awards from the 125th Anniversary Appeal Fund – Total £5,405
In 2006, the Schools Sub-Committee supported the following school resources, activities and initiatives through monies from the 125th Anniversary Appeal:-
a) War with Troy CD Set Scheme: purchase of sets from the University of Cambridge Schools Classics Project (£2,189) to present free to schools, and postage of sets to schools around the UK (£170); and support of an INSET day for PGCE students on War With Troy at the Faculty of Education, Cambridge (£250).
b) Support for Schools on SPHS Website: developing and updating support pages, the schools artwork gallery and providing downloadable teaching materials (£60).
c) Funding of School Grants for “Greece in Schools” activities: Grants in 2006 were £1,950 in total and comprised: Dashwood County Primary School (Greek Day) - £250; Sandis Productions Ltd (2006 London Greek Season) - £250; Live-In-History (June 2006 Ancient Greek Festival) - £250; Zouch Primary School, Tidworth (Greek Day) - £200; Hellenic College, London (Junior Greek Drama Competition) - £50; Tockwith CofE Primary School, York (Greek Day) - £100; Walker Primary School, London (Greek resource activities) - £100; Charlotte Parkyn (University of Birmingham Electra project worjshops) - £100; The Watchetts Junior School, Camberley (Greek Day) - £200; Fatfield Primary School, Washington - £100; St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School (Greek Day) - £200; Ely St Mary CofE Junior School (Greek Day) - £150.
d) Schools Artwork Competition: prizes and awards to students and schools (£665), artwork photography and gallery costs (£95), and postage and preparation of materials (£25).
