Journal of Hellenic Studies

Instructions to Reviewers

Reviewers are reminded that rising costs are placing increasing pressure on the Journal, and are asked to write as briefly as possible, while still doing justice to the book(s) under review. If they feel they need to exceed the word-limit, they should contact the review editor well in advance of the submission date.

Reviews should give an indication of the content of the book(s), but should not confine themselves to summaries. The main aim of the review should be to give readers a sense of the contribution the book(s) make(s) to scholarship.

JHS has a wide readership, and reviews should be accessible to readers who are not experts in the subjects covered by the book(s). Technical language and quotations in foreign languages should be used only where essential. All reviews should be in English.

Reviewers of collections should not feel obliged to discuss all contributions, but should concentrate on those that appear to be most important, passing over others in silence if necessary. Discussion of the overall theme of a volume will usually be interesting, but reviews should also focus on individual chapters.

Reviewers should feel free to let their personal voice come through to highlight the most rewarding or engaging aspects of the book(s).

Misprints should be commented on only if they seriously affect the quality of the volume(s).

Style

Please list the books at the top of the review in the order you discuss them, using this format:

LEHMLER (C.) Syrakus unter Agathokles und Hieron II: Die Verbindung von Kultur und Macht in einer Hellenistischen Metropole.  Frankfurt: Verlag Antike, 2005. Pp. 254, illus. €37.90. 9783938032077.

FORTENBAUGH (W. W.) and WHITE (S. A.) Eds. Aristo of Ceos: Text, Translation, and Discussion. (Rutgers University Studies in Classical Humanities 13).  New Brunswick, NJ: Transaction Publishers, 2006.  Pp. x + 373.  £46.50. 9780765802835.

(Please give the 13-digit, rather than 10-digit, ISBN.)

The name of the author(s) of the volume under review should be given in full at the first occurrence in the review; thereafter please use only an initial (followed by a full stop). Names of authors of individual articles within collections should not be abbreviated. Technical and foreign words should be printed in italics or underlined. Quotations in modern languages should be placed between single quotation marks. Quotations in Greek do not need quotation marks. Figures under 100 should be spelt out. Please refer to pages by number alone, reserving p./pp. for cases where the meaning is otherwise unclear; please use ‘ch.’ rather than ‘chapter’.

There are no footnotes in the review section. References should be incorporated into the main text, in brackets if appropriate. Please use the following format for references:
Thuc. 2.36.4
K. Dowden, The Uses of Greek Mythology (1992) 49-51
M. Finkelberg, ‘Patterns of human error in Homer’, JHS 15 (1995) 15-28

If possible, please use a unicode font for words and quotations in Greek.

Below your review, please put your institution in italics on the left, and your name on the right in ordinary capitals. Please also indicate whether or not you would like your email address to appear as well (this is a new policy as of the 2007 issue).

Loan copies should be returned directly to the library.

Reviews may be submitted in one of two forms. Most reviewers send them by attachment to the email address below. Alternatively, reviews may be sent in hardcopy (single-sided) and on disk to the review editor at the address below. In either case, please send documents in Word or .rtf format, and please provide an e-mail and postal address at which the copy-editor can contact you. At proof stage, please only make corrections that are absolutely necessary.
